Wind Stopped Las Vegas-Bound Flights on Sunday: A Ground Stop, a 49-Minute Average Delay and a Slow Evening at Harry Reid

Sunday's weather bill came due at the airport. Strong winds brought an FAA ground stop for Las Vegas-bound flights at about 1:20 p.m., a ground delay program averaging 49 minutes that ran to midnight, and an evening in which departures averaged about 45 minutes late and roughly one in four flights was delayed.

The storm system that soaked the valley on Sunday also shut its front door for part of the afternoon. Strong winds cut the rate at which planes could land at Harry Reid International Airport, and the Federal Aviation Administration put flights bound for Las Vegas under a ground stop at about 1:20 p.m. Pacific — holding them at their departure airports — before converting the restriction into a ground delay program that ran until 11:59 p.m. The FAA figures carried in the tracker reports read by the desk put the program's average delay at about 49 minutes, with a maximum of two hours and 53 minutes.

The evening improved without ever quite recovering. By the tracker's 5:52 p.m. update, Las Vegas-bound flights were moving again, but departures from Harry Reid were averaging about 45 minutes late and arrivals close to an hour, with both still climbing as the evening rush built. Roughly one in four Las Vegas flights was delayed across Sunday; only four were canceled — a disruption measured in long waits rather than lost trips, on the last heavy travel day of the Halloween weekend.

Monday's forecast is the airport's friend: the station's live feed reads a dry day with a high near 71 and no rain, the same calm pattern that covers Election Day. Sunday's lesson stands for the next windy one, though — a ground stop is decided where you take off, not where you land, so the check that matters is the airline app before leaving for a flight into a Las Vegas wind event, not the departure board after it.
