Arts District Merchants Say the Commerce and Charleston Closure, Now Stretched to November 20, Is Costing Them Customers

The south side of Commerce Street at Charleston Boulevard was supposed to reopen October 26. The city is keeping it closed until November 20 instead, and Arts District vendors say the parking barriers and construction are making it harder for customers to reach them — even as the city says the longer closure finishes the concrete and paving work sooner.

Arts District Merchants Say the Commerce and Charleston Closure, Now Stretched to November 20, Is Costing Them Customers (Las Vegas Strip News)

November in the Arts District begins behind barricades. Las Vegas has extended the closure of the south side of Commerce Street and Charleston Boulevard through November 20, weeks past the intersection's scheduled October 26 reopening, as part of the Charleston Boulevard Storm Drain Project. The city says keeping the closure in place lets crews complete concrete work and prepare for paving more quickly; the broader storm drain project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.

The merchants on the other side of the barriers are counting a different cost. The Las Vegas Focal reported that Arts District vendors say parking restrictions and construction are hurting customer access and that businesses are seeing fewer visitors while the closure stretches into November. The city's announcement, the report noted, does not identify the parking restrictions outside at least one business as part of the project — a gap between the official work zone and the lived one that storefronts are navigating day to day.

For drivers, the geometry is unchanged but worth repeating: Commerce Street remains open to two-way traffic between California Avenue and the work zone, and Charleston Boulevard stays open with one lane in each direction through the area. The city recommends Bonneville Avenue and Oakey Boulevard as the east-west alternates. For the Arts District, the ask embedded in the merchants' reports is simpler — that customers keep coming despite the cones, because November 20 is the city's date, not theirs.
