Nevada Election Night: Polls Close at 7, Early Results Come First — and a Close Race Could Run Past Midnight
Here is the shape of Tuesday night in Clark County: the first results update tends to carry the early vote and part of the mail vote, Election Day ballots follow, and in 2024 Nevada's first numbers did not arrive until nearly three hours after the polls closed.

When Clark County's 138 vote centers close at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the counting does not produce an instant answer — it produces a sequence, and knowing the sequence is how to read the night. State law requires polls to stay open until every voter who was in line by 7 p.m. has cast a ballot, and results are posted only after that. In Clark and Washoe counties, according to the Associated Press guide to Nevada's election night, the first update of the night tends to include all of the early in-person results and part of the mail results; returns from Election Day voting in person are released after that.
The AP says it will report results and declare winners in Nevada's races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, controller and state treasurer, among others — and that it will call a race only when the outcome is settled. That caution matters in a state where mail ballots postmarked by Election Day can arrive through Nov. 7 and where the governor's race enters the day polling at a tie.
History sets the expectation for patience. In the 2024 general election, Nevada's first results began arriving at 12:54 a.m. Eastern — about three hours after the polls closed in the state. Tuesday night in Las Vegas will therefore come in layers: an early-vote wave first, Election Day precincts behind it, and, in the closest races, a wait that can run past midnight before anyone responsible declares a winner.
